​AI Uses Health Data to Predict Early Death from Electrocardiograms​

Researchers at Imperial College London have developed an AI model capable of predicting health risks, including the risk of early death, by analyzing electrocardiograms (ECGs).

This AI model, trained on millions of ECGs from routine care, can detect subtle details in the heart's electrical signals that are often missed by cardiologists. The model, called AI-ECG risk estimation (AIRE), was able to correctly predict the risk of death within 10 years in 78% of cases.

A key insight is that the model not only predicts heart-related risks such as heart attacks, heart rhythm problems, and heart failure, but also identifies non-heart-related risks by detecting how conditions like diabetes affect the heart. The AI can assess accelerated aging and provide broader health insights beyond the cardiovascular system.

Additionally, the AI was shown to be more precise and biologically grounded, linking its predictions to real changes in the heart's structure and function. This credible and reliable tool could be transformative for the NHS, allowing for early detection and prioritization of urgent cases, potentially reducing waiting times and improving resource allocation. However, clinical trials are planned to test if these predictions can improve patient outcomes, with trials starting across NHS hospitals by 2025.

Robot's painting could fetch more than $120,000 at auction​

The humanoid robot Ai-Da is set to make history at Sotheby’s in October 2024 with the auction of her artwork titled “AI God,” a portrait of Alan Turing, a pioneer in computing and artificial intelligence.

The portrait, created through a combination of AI algorithms and bionic arms, is expected to fetch between $120,000 and $180,000. Ai-Da’s creators aim to spark discussions about the intersection of art, creativity, and the ethical implications of AI, as her work raises questions about where the power of AI will take us.

This sale marks the first time a humanoid robot’s art will be sold at a major auction house, underlining the increasing presence of AI in creative fields. The portrait itself, described as “haunting,” reflects Turing’s own warnings about the future potential of AI.

AI Tool Spotlight: Claude's New 'Analysis Tool'​

The analysis tool is a newly integrated feature within Claude.ai, allowing users to write and execute JavaScript code directly within the platform. Claude can now process data, perform complex analyses, and provide real-time insights.

This tool functions like a built-in code sandbox, enabling Claude to go beyond simple reasoning to offer precise, reproducible, and mathematically verified answers. This development enhances Claude’s ability to work on structured data, such as CSV files, enabling it to clean, explore, and analyze data just as a real data analyst would.

The analysis tool also expands the practical use cases of Claude.ai across different teams.

Marketers can analyze customer data to identify conversion opportunities, sales teams can dissect country-specific performance metrics, and finance teams can generate dashboards based on financial data. Engineers and product managers can also leverage the tool for server performance analysis and customer engagement insights, respectively.

This feature is available in a feature preview to all Claude.ai users, and to activate it, users can log into their accounts and enable it via their profile settings.
