Explicit ‘AI Girlfriends’ Ads Swarm Facebook and Instagram

🤖

Meta, known for its strict ad policies prohibiting adult content, is currently under scrutiny as thousands of ads for AI-generated, NSFW "girlfriend" apps remain active across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. These ads, which often showcase sexually explicit chatbots and simulated images of partially clothed women, seemingly flout Meta's guidelines against adult content.

The ads, some featuring provocative role-play scenarios, have been highlighted in a comprehensive investigation by WIRED using Meta's ad library—a transparency tool that tracks advertising data across its services.

Despite Meta's public stance against such content, the persistent presence of these ads has sparked debate and criticism from human sex workers and advocates, who accuse the company of enforcing a double standard.

While ads for AI companions thrive, human sex workers face stringent restrictions and potential account suspensions for similar content. This situation highlights ongoing tensions over digital content moderation, the ethical implications of AI in advertising, and the broader societal debates over sex work and digital censorship.

Meta has responded by stating it is actively reviewing and removing ads that violate its policies, yet significant numbers of these ads continue to circulate.

STUDY: 80% of US Jobs Could Double Their Efficiency Through AI Use

Los Angeles Metro is installing AI-powered cameras on its buses to automatically detect and ticket illegally parked vehicles blocking bus lanes and stops. The program, developed by Hayden AI under an $11 million contract, aims to improve bus speeds and accessibility. Around 100 camera systems will be mounted on bus windshields to scan for parking violations.

After a 60-day warning period, the AI cameras will record license plates and footage of illegally parked cars, which will be reviewed by city traffic officers before issuing citations. The technology is designed to only record potential violations to protect privacy.

Testing begins this summer, with a full rollout expected by the end of 2024 after community outreach. The use of AI-powered video enforcement for parking tickets was legalized in California in 2021. Similar systems are already used in Washington D.C. and New York City as AI expands for transportation safety applications.

Separately, regional rail operator Metrolink also recently received $1.3 million to develop an AI system to detect hazards and trespassing on train tracks.

AI Word of the Day: Kernel

Kernel in computing has multiple meanings depending on the context. In operating systems, a kernel is the core component that manages system operations between the hardware and software applications.

In machine learning, particularly in support vector machines (SVM) and other kernel-based methods, a kernel function is used to transform data into a higher-dimensional space to make it easier to classify linearly when it is not linearly separable in the original space.

Why It Matters

In machine learning, kernel functions are crucial because they allow complex problems to be solved more efficiently. By using a kernel, algorithms can operate in a transformed feature space without the need to compute the coordinates of the data in that space explicitly.

This not only saves computational resources but also enhances the capability of the model to learn non-linear patterns. This is essential in many real-world applications where data is not linearly separable.

Real-World Example

Imagine a credit scoring system used by banks to decide whether to approve loan applications. The relationships between variables such as income, credit history, and loan repayment are complex and often non-linear.

Kernel methods can be applied to project these variables into a higher-dimensional space where the separations between approved and non-approved applications become clearer.

This allows the bank’s machine learning model to make more accurate predictions about the loan repayment capabilities of applicants, ultimately leading to better risk management and lower default rates.
