AI Can Use Facial Recognition to Predict How You'll Vote

πŸ€–

Researchers have found that artificial intelligence can predict someone's political orientation surprisingly well just from analyzing images of their expressionless faces. In a study published in American Psychologist, an AI algorithm was able to accurately guess people's political leanings on par with how well job interviews predict job success.

The researchers warn this raises serious privacy concerns around facial recognition technology. Even if someone hasn't shared their political views publicly, the study suggests their face alone could reveal this sensitive information to AI systems. The lead author calls this a "warning tale" about the privacy threats posed by facial recognition that can infer characteristics people may want to keep private.

The study extracted "facial fingerprints" from tightly controlled photos of 591 people's blank faces. It found conservatives tended to have larger lower faces. While people used to be able to control what personal information was publicly available online, the researchers caution that simply having your photo available could now allow AI to deduce details like political leanings without consent.

Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses have multimodal AI now

Meta has added multimodal AI capabilities to the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. Users can say "Hey Meta, look and..." followed by commands like "tell me what this plant is" or "read this sign." The AI will analyze a photo or scene through the glasses' camera and provide information or translations via the audio.

The AI can identify objects, plants, landmarks, read text, and attempt to write amusing captions, though its capabilities are limited. It works best for simple identification tasks but can be confidently wrong at times.

In addition to the new AI features, the Ray-Ban glasses offer live streaming, point-of-view photo/video capture, and open-ear audio as capable headphones. The multimodal AI augments the existing functionality as a step toward face-worn computing, though pulling out a smartphone is still often faster and more capable for now.

AI Word of the Day: Tensor Processing Units (TPUs)

Tensor Processing Units (TPU) are specialized hardware designed by Google to accelerate machine learning tasks.

These processors are specifically optimized for the operations used in neural network algorithms, particularly those involving high volumes of matrix and vector calculations, which are commonly referred to as tensor operations in deep learning frameworks.

Why It Matters

TPUs matter because they significantly speed up the training and inference processes of deep learning models.

Compared to traditional CPUs and even GPUs, TPUs can process massive amounts of data more quickly and efficiently, reducing the time it takes to develop and deploy AI models.

This acceleration is crucial for applications requiring real-time processing and rapid responsiveness, such as autonomous vehicles, real-time language translation, and large-scale AI services like those offered by cloud platforms.

Real-World Example

In the realm of AI-driven health diagnostics, TPUs can play a critical role by enabling faster and more accurate analysis of medical imaging data. TPUs can process complex deep-learning models that analyze high-resolution medical images, such as MRIs or CT scans, to detect anomalies like tumors or fractures.

The speed and efficiency of TPUs allow for near-real-time diagnostics, which is vital for timely treatment decisions.

This capability demonstrates how TPUs are not just enhancing existing technologies but are pivotal in advancing the frontier of medical research and patient care, making sophisticated diagnostic tools more accessible and effective.
